Tom says his passion has always been being outdoors and on the water! Having been raised in Florida he had numerous opportunities to do both.
Being a nature lover, camping and being on the water kept me outdoors . I was surrounded by the beauty of nature in many remote places. I once spent a month camping on Kice Island, which is located in the Everglades. I have also camped extensively throughout North and South Florida, as well as several parts of North America.
My dad always had cameras. Some of them were from his father, who was one of the first Kodak investors. As a result his cameras were passed to my father and then on to me . As a young boy, I was fascinated by the images my dad shot. He once filmed his sister competing at a Hunter Jumper show. A few year later he traveled to, and filmed the Grand Canyon. Later he double exposed the film, so that she appeared to be jumping her horse over the Grand Canyon. I became totally intrigued with how you can be so creative with photography. Thus my passion for photography was born.
I never had any interest in taking photographs of people. It was my love of the water and nature, coupled with my interest in photography, that made landscape photography my focus.
Years ago I set out to shoot images of historical boathouses. Having over 3600 lakes in Northern Wisconsin, I had many to choose from when shooting images for the book. It took over 5 years to assemble enough images to publish my book, titled Boathouses. After it was published I was fortunate to be interviewed on NPR radio, to discuss and promote the book. I also did several book signing throughout the state.
